Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about handmade hand-knotted rugs — from materials and craftsmanship to care and shopping.

About Our Rugs

What makes a hand-knotted rug different from a machine-made rug?+

Every hand-knotted rug is tied one knot at a time by a skilled artisan. A single rug can take months — sometimes years — to complete, depending on size and knot density. Machine-made rugs are produced in hours on power looms. The difference shows in durability (hand-knotted rugs last 50 to 100+ years versus 5 to 15 for machine-made), uniqueness (no two handmade rugs are identical), and value (handmade rugs appreciate over time while machine-made rugs depreciate).

How can I tell if a rug is genuinely handmade?+

Flip the rug over. On a hand-knotted rug the pattern is clearly visible on the back, and you can see slight irregularities where the artisan tied each knot. Machine-made rugs have a uniform, perfectly even backing — often with a mesh or canvas foundation. You can also feel the pile: handmade rugs have a natural, slightly uneven texture, while machine-made pile feels uniformly stiff.

Where do your rugs come from?+

Our collection spans Persia, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Afghanistan, and the Caucasus region. Each origin carries its own weaving tradition, design heritage, and material specialty. Persian rugs — from regions like Tabriz, Isfahan, and Kashan — are particularly renowned for their fine knotting and intricate patterns. We personally source every rug, continuing a tradition our family began over 45 years ago.

How long does a handmade rug last?+

With proper care, a quality hand-knotted wool rug lasts 50 to 100 years or more. Many antique rugs in museums and private collections are several centuries old and still beautiful. Silk rugs are more delicate but can last generations when placed in lower-traffic areas. Compare this to machine-made rugs, which typically show significant wear within 5 to 15 years.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Why are natural fibers like wool and silk better than synthetic materials?+

Wool contains lanolin, a natural oil that repels water and resists staining. It is inherently flame-resistant, regulates humidity, and becomes softer with age. Silk offers an unmatched luminous sheen and allows for extremely fine knotting, which makes intricate designs possible. Synthetic fibers — nylon, polypropylene, polyester — lack these natural properties, flatten under traffic, and cannot be restored the way natural fibers can.

Are natural fiber rugs better for my health?+

Yes. Natural wool and silk rugs do not off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are common in synthetic carpets and can irritate airways and eyes. Wool naturally traps dust, pollen, and allergens in its fibers, keeping them out of the air until your next vacuuming. It also resists mold, mildew, and bacteria growth, making it a healthier choice for homes — especially for families with children or allergy sensitivities.

What are natural dyes and why do they matter?+

Natural dyes are extracted from plants, minerals, and insects — pomegranate rinds for yellow, indigo leaves for blue, madder root for red, walnut husks for brown. They bond with wool and silk at a molecular level, producing rich, complex colors that age gracefully. Over decades, naturally dyed rugs develop a quality called "abrash" — subtle color variations that give the rug character and depth. Synthetic dyes, while consistent, tend to fade uniformly and can look flat by comparison.

What is KPSI and why does it matter?+

KPSI stands for Knots Per Square Inch — a measure of how densely a rug is knotted. Higher KPSI means finer detail, more intricate patterns, and more time invested by the weaver. A coarse tribal rug may have 60 to 80 KPSI, while a fine Persian silk rug can exceed 400 KPSI. Higher knot density generally correlates with greater value, but the beauty of a rug depends on many factors — design, materials, age, and provenance all play a role.

Care & Maintenance

How do I care for my handmade rug?+

Vacuum gently once a week (avoid beater bars), rotate the rug every six months to even out wear and sun exposure, and use a quality rug pad underneath. Keep the rug out of prolonged direct sunlight and have it professionally cleaned every two to four years. For detailed guidance, visit our Rug Care Guide.

Can I clean my rug myself?+

For routine maintenance, yes — gentle vacuuming and prompt blotting of spills are things you can and should do at home. However, deep cleaning should always be handled by a professional who specializes in hand-knotted rugs. Household carpet shampoos, steam cleaners, and DIY stain removers can damage natural fibers, bleed dyes, and weaken knots. See our Rug Care Guide for step-by-step spill response.

What should I do if something spills on my rug?+

Act quickly: blot (never scrub) from the outer edge inward with a clean, dry white cloth. Lift solids carefully with a spoon. Use small amounts of cool water only if needed, then blot dry again. If color transfer or odor remains, stop and contact a professional cleaner. Our Rug Care Guide has a full step-by-step emergency protocol.

Shopping & Sizing

How do I choose the right rug size for my room?+

A good rule of thumb: in a living room, the rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of all seating to rest on it. In a dining room, add 24 inches to each side of the table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. In a bedroom, a rug that extends 18 to 24 inches beyond each side of the bed creates a comfortable landing area. When in doubt, go larger — a rug that is too small for the space tends to look like an afterthought.

Can I see a rug in person before buying?+

Absolutely. We welcome visitors by appointment at our showroom. Seeing and touching a handmade rug in person is the best way to appreciate the texture, color depth, and craftsmanship that photos alone cannot fully capture. Contact us to schedule a visit.

Do your prices include shipping?+

We offer complimentary shipping on orders within the continental United States. For Alaska, Hawaii, and international destinations, please contact us for a shipping quote. Every rug is carefully rolled, wrapped, and insured for transit.

What is your return policy?+

We want you to love your rug. If it does not work in your space, you may return it within 14 days of delivery in its original condition for a full refund. Return shipping is the buyer's responsibility. Please contact us before shipping any returns so we can provide instructions and ensure a smooth process.

Do you offer rug padding?+

Yes. We recommend a quality felt-and-rubber rug pad for every purchase. Padding protects both the rug and your floor, prevents slipping, reduces wear, and makes the rug feel more cushioned underfoot. We can include a custom-cut pad sized to your rug — just ask when ordering.
